Coexistence and Joint Measurability in Quantum Mechanics

چکیده
This talk is a survey of the question of joint measurability of coexistent observables and its is based on the monograph Operational Quantum Physics [1] and on the papers [2, 3, 4]. A lecture presented at Quantum Composite Systems 2002, Ustron, Poland, 3.-7.9.2002.

On the Sharpness and Bias of Quantum Effects
The question of quantifying the sharpness (or unsharpness) of a quantum mechanical effect is investigated. Apart from sharpness, another property, bias, is found to be relevant for the joint measurability or coexistence of two effects. Measures of bias will be defined and examples given.
متن کاملOn the Notion of Coexistence in Quantum Mechanics
The notion coexistence of quantum observables was introduced to describe the possibility of measuring two or more observables together. Here we survey the various different formalisations of this notion and their connections. We review examples illustrating the necessary degrees of unsharpness for two noncommuting observables to be jointly measurable (in one sense of the phrase). We demonstrate...
متن کاملQuantum theory realises all joint measurability graphs
Joint measurability of sharp quantum observables is determined pairwise, and so can be captured in a graph. We prove the converse: any graph, whose vertices represent sharp observables, and whose edges represent joint measurability, is realised by quantum theory. This leads us to show that it is not always possible to use Neumark dilation to turn unsharp observables into sharp ones with the sam...
متن کاملAll joint measurability structures are quantum realizable
The general impossibility of jointly implementing arbitrary sets of measurements is a fundamental feature of quantum theory. Indeed, it is a key ingredient that enables a demonstration of the nonclassicality of quantum theory in proofs of Bell’s theorem [1] and the Kochen-Specker theorem [2]. A finite set of measurements is called jointly measurable or compatible if there exists a single measur...
متن کاملCoexistence of Quantum Operations
Quantum operations are used to describe the observed probability distributions and conditional states of the measured system. In this paper, we address the problem of their joint measurability (coexistence). We derive two equivalent coexistence criteria. The two most common classes of operations — Lüders operations and conditional state preparators — are analyzed. It is shown that Lüders operat...
